Es un ave monógama. Se alimenta de anfibios, reptiles e insectos y nidifica en los árboles. La puesta consta de dos o tres huevos de color blanco azulado. Sus nidos son espectaculares encima de acacias no muy altas.
Este ave goza de absoluta protección aunque afortunadamente su inclusión en la lista roja de las UNESCO es como ave no amenazada. El Secretario es el emblema nacional de Sudán así como se le observa en el Escudo de la Republica de Sudáfrica.
